Common Sense in Chess960

This post should have been made on my chess960 blog, but the last post there put that blog in hibernation: 2025 FCGST, Paris [Not!] (April 2025; 'I considered closing this blog, but since I've already tried to do that twice ... I'll just declare a pause.'). I've already featured ten or so chess960 videos on this, my main, blog, so one more won't set any new precedents.

Magnus Carlsen explains why he loves Freestyle Chess (9:39) • '[Published on] Apr 25, 2025'

The description of the video said,

Magnus Carlsen breaks down his approach to Freestyle Chess, also known as Chess 960 or Fischer Random Chess. By generating random boards and analyzing the positions, Magnus gives us an unfiltered look into his mind and how he looks at this variant of chess.

The world's top-rated chess player discusses two start positions. For the first positions (SP937 RKRBBNQN), he points out,

01:25 The b-Pawn is defended only by the King.
01:47 The Queen is far from the King.
02:14 The King is 'half-castled', making the two square advance of the a-Pawn an option.
03:17 Both Bishops are in the middle, which is probably the worst place they can be.
03:52 Both Knights are in the corner away from the King; they will probably be developed behind a Pawn.
04:41 The game will probably develop slowly.
04:52 No single first move comes to mind immediately.
05:13 Mainly consider moving a Pawn two squares: a4, c4, f4, g4 make sense.
06:39 Only the Ra1 is on the same start square as the traditional start position.

Another takeaway: Carlsen refers to Kingside and Queenside, rather than a-side and h-side. This is also my preference, where common sense wins over jargon.

The video is on Youtube channel 'Team Liquid Chess'. The channel description informs, 'Who would win, 64 squares or 1 esports team? Home to all chess content for Team Liquid, including Magnus Carlsen & Fabiano Caruana.' The site Team Liquid (liquipedia.net/chess; 'Liquipedia Chess Wiki'), further informs,

Team Liquid is an esports organization, founded in the Netherlands in 2000. Originally a StarCraft: Brood War clan, the team switched to StarCraft II during the SC2 Beta in 2010, and became one of the most successful western teams. On February 13, 2025, The Dutch organization announced their entry to the chess competitive scene.

Sounds like a winner to me, but how does chess960 fit in?

Dojo Talks Doggers

According to my records, I've had Youtube's ChessDojo channel on the short list for monthly featured video a total of 16 times since 2021. After four years the channel finally gets the recognition it deserves.

The Chess Revolution w/ Peter Doggers | Dojo Talks (1:00:31) • '[Published on] Apr 3, 2025'

The description said,

IM Kostya Kavutskiy, IM David Pruess, and GM Jesse Kraai talk about the book The Chess Revolution with guest journalist Peter Doggers on today's episode of Dojo Talks, the ChessDojo podcast!

For an earlier post mentioning the same book, see World Championship Yahoos 2024 (November 2024). There I highlighted an introduction to the book by Doggers and quoted him saying,

2024-11-19: The Chess Revolution: Understanding The Power Of An Ancient Game In The Digital Age (chess.com; PeterDoggers) [...] It is for chess fans but definitely also for non-chess playing readers. I am super excited that almost two years after starting this project, the book hit book stores in October. Let me tell you more about it and the writing process.'

The book is currently no.16 on Amazon's list of best sellers for chess, just behind 'Dinosaur Bingo' (?!). No.1 on the list is currently 'Check & Mate' by Ali Hazelwood: 'Life's moving pieces bring rival chess players together in a match for the heart.' I'm sure I would enjoy the Doggers book more than the Hazelwood book.

Quantum Chess Theory

Quantum chess is one of those intriguing ideas that appear on the CFAA radar every so often. The last time it featured as video of the month was Quantum Chess and AI (September 2020). Here's a more down-to-earth angle.

How Does Quantum Chess Work? (5:57) • '[Published on] Feb 15, 2025'

The description said,

Today, I show a new update to chess! This game features quantum chess with superposition, entanglement, and the observer effect! [...] It's a combination of chess in Ohio, Minecraft Block Battles in Chess, Anarchy Chess, ChatGPT Chess, Top Chess, Gotham Chess, Chess 2, 5D Chess, Open World Chess, and more! If you enjoy the chess memes YouTube shorts, like and subscribe!

That's all very nice, but I didn't understand the video, even after watching it twice. The missing bit in that description ('[...]') pointed to quantumrealmgames.com/play. Why not just go there and play for myself?

That also turned out to be easier said than done, because the site slowed my oldest PC -- the same PC that I use to write these blog posts -- to a crawl. It happened twice, on two different days, so I'm guessing that my PC and the site are not compatible.

For my next attempt, I'll publish this post, access the site from my newest PC, and add any fresh observations to the post. In the meantime, here are the 'HOW TO PLAY' basic instructions as copied from that Quantum Realm Games site.

Standard Move • Select the piece you want to move, then click the target square.

Split Move • Select the piece you want to move, then hold-click the first target, drag to the second, and release.

Merge Move • Hold-click the first piece, drag to the second piece, and release. Then select merge target.

Back in a jiffy...

DGT Enschede NL

Of the 22 clips on this month's short list for featured video of the month, 14 were for the first leg of the 2025 FCGST (December 2024; '2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour') in Weissenhaus, Germany. Since I'll be discussing that event on my chess960 blog -- to which that FCGST link goes -- I picked another clip for this post.

A tour of the massive DGT office | World's most loved chess boards and clock brand (38:08) • '[Published on] 8 Feb 2025'

Once again, the video is from ChessBase India. The description said,

DGT is a very well known name for any professional chess player! Almost all of the top FIDE events have their chess boards and pieces used. Even the clock that is used across all FIDE events is the DGT clock. Seeing the huge scale of presence that the company has, we were of course curious about the office of DGT. Sagar [IM Shah of ChessBase India] was in the Netherlands for the Tata Steel Chess 2025. He travelled to Enschede from Wijk Aan Zee to bring you this DGT office tour.

For the previous post featuring DGT, see A Special Chess Board (September 2019).

The Noblest Prize

Although we've seen Demis Hassabis on this blog almost a dozen times, it's been a few years since the last time -- Beyond AlphaZero (September 2019) -- and even then it was just in passing. What has the chess player turned entrepreneur been doing since then?

Accelerating scientific discovery with AI (29:01) • '[Published on] Dec 16, 2024'

The description of the video says,

Nobel lecture with the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2024 Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind, London, UK. Introduction by Johan Aaqvist, member of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. From: The Nobel Lectures 2024, 2024-12-08.

The description then points to a press release from early October: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024: They cracked the code for proteins' amazing structures (kva.se; 'The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences'). It starts,

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 with one half to David Baker, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA "for computational protein design" and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis, Google DeepMind, London, UK and John Jumper, Google DeepMind, London, UK "for protein structure prediction".

That introduction is followed by an explanation of the science involved:-

The diversity of life testifies to proteins’ amazing capacity as chemical tools. They control and drive all the chemical reactions that together are the basis of life. Proteins also function as hormones, signal substances, antibodies and the building blocks of different tissues.

Working with Gukesh 'A Fascinating Journey'

In this series of monthly posts featuring a video, we've seen Youtube's ChessBase India channel (CBI) many times, most recently in The London Chess Centre on Video (October 2024). This month's video is a collaboration between CBI and Youtube's Paddy Upton channel, where it lives.

Who is Paddy Upton? Wikipedia's page Paddy Upton (wikipedia.org) informs,

Patrick Anthony Howard 'Paddy' Upton (born 5 November 1968) is a South African born cricket coach specialising as head coach in professional Twenty20 cricket, mental coach to professional athletes, sports scientist executive coach and professor of practice at Deakin University.

What do cricket and chess have in common? The following clip answers that question and many others.

How I'm Coaching Gukesh D for the World Chess Championship (32:13) • '[Published on] Nov 19, 2024'

The video's description said,

In this interview with @ChessBaseIndiachannel, I share my experience working with Indian chess sensation Gukesh D as he prepares for the World Chess Championship. Having worked with world-class athletes across 20+ sports, from legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virat Kohli to the Indian Men's Hockey team at the 2024 Olympic Games. Stepping into the world of chess has been a fascinating journey.

The description continued,

In this video, I [Paddy Upton] discuss:
* Why Gukesh stands out as one of the smartest, most self-aware athletes I’ve worked with.
* How "big match temperament" enables athletes to thrive under pressure.
* The importance of focusing on the process rather than the result.
* How universal principles of mental conditioning apply across all sports.
* Lessons from life and spirituality that help athletes stay grounded and perform their best.

I've always been somewhat skeptical whenever I hear someone say, 'Chess is a sport'. After watching this video, I'm less skeptical.

Carlsen, Ding Liren, Nakamura on WCC 2024

'Take Take Take'? Where have I heard that in reference to chess before? It turns out that it was just a few weeks ago in A Press of Yahoos (October 2024). There I quoted a press report,

2024-10-25: After 20 years at the top of chess, Magnus Carlsen is making his next move (apnews.com; Mark Lewis) • 'Offering a new way to interact with the game, Carlsen on Friday launched his application, Take Take Take, which will follow live games and players, explaining matches in an accessible way that, Carlsen says, is sometimes missing from streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch. "It will be a chiller vibe," he says.'

A clip from the app's Youtube channel made it to the short list for this month's featured video.

The World Chess Champion Opens Up About His Struggles (35:39) • '[Published on] Nov 4, 2024'

The channel's home page informs,

'Your front row seat to the world of chess. Download the app!' • 'Joined [Youtube] Sep 30, 2024'

The hosts of the clip are Kaja Snare and David Howell. In a post on an earlier title match, 2021 Carlsen - Nepomniachtchi, we saw them mentioned together in A Trio of World Championship Video Makers (December 2021). One of the many teams for the three video makers was:-

Chess24.com: Live commentary by GM David Howell, IM Jovanka Houska, and Norwegian journalist Kaja Snare.

As luck would have it, the featured 'Take Take Take' video received critical analysis on GMHikaru's Youtube channel:-

GMs Carlsen, Ding Liren, and Nakamura (among many others) all provide expert commentary on the background for the forthcoming 2024 Ding Liren - Gukesh title match. There is much to be gleaned from the two videos.

13 October 2024

The London Chess Centre on Video

Just a few weeks ago, in a post titled Historic Olympiad Yahoos (September 2024), I noted,

The 100 stories total for September had the first nine under a heading that proclaimed, 'India win historic double gold at Chess Olympiad'. I counted another 18 stories about the Olympiad for a total of 27, plus a few more stories lacking the word 'Olympiad' in the title.

As confirmation of that note, this month's short list for the featured monthly video had a third of its clips from the ChessBase India channel, a resource that currently has over two million subscribers. Although most of the clips were about the Olympiad, I chose to use one of the two that had nothing to do with that historic event. Why? Because I like the subject and have a lot of respect for owner IM Malcolm Pein.

A Unique Chess Store For Chess Lovers In London | Chess & Bridge London (4:27) • '[Published on] Oct 12, 2024'

The description explained,

For more about the store, see its web site Chess and Bridge Online Shop (chess.co.uk).

US Chess on Video

With less than 100 views and zero comments after three weeks on Youtube, this video might be the least popular chess clip that I've ever selected for a monthly featured video post. So why feature it? Because I liked the inside look at the US Chess federation.

US Chess Federation Staff Forum Friday August 2 2024 (5:57) • '[Published on] Aug 19, 2024'

The description said,

US Chess is the official, not-for-profit US membership organization for chess players and chess supporters of all ages and strengths, from beginners to Grandmasters. Find out more at uschess.org

That was followed by around a dozen links to various aspects of US Chess, four of which were under the header 'Women in Chess'. At the end of the video, the staff forum morphs into a membership meeeting which has also been recorded for posterity:-

If you like this sort of thing -- I appreciate that it's not for everyone -- don't miss:-

Nearly nine hours long, it even has a transcript. For more about the venue, see What to Expect at the 124th Annual U.S. Open (uschess.org; JJ Lang). It starts,

The 124th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship begins Saturday, July 27 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. Here is a primer of what to expect and how to follow all the action!

For more about the meetings, scroll to the bottom of that page to find 'Meet, Mingle, Delegate'. Even though online chess gets most of the attention and the players, US Chess is alive and well.

Vishy Sweats It Out

Remember Everyone's Favorite World Champion (October 2023; 'We recently caught up with the man, myth and legend Viswanathan Anand to give us a house tour...')? Here he is again, sweating it out more than he does in most chess games.

Vishy Answers Intense Rapid Fire Questions! (4:19) • '[Published on] Jul 19, 2024'

The description of the video says,

The GOAT of Indian chess, Viswanathan Anand is back to serve some HOT TAKES with our Rapid Fire Questions!

Q: The best game you have ever played? • A: Lautier, Biel 96. • He got the year wrong, but what a game: Viswanathan Anand vs Joel Lautier; Biel Credit Suisse 1997 (chessgames.com). At the end of the clip he says, 'I'm a chess player', in six different languages.

Gotham Talks at Google

The title of the post for this month's featured video echoes the title of a previous featured video, Kasparov Talks at Google (June 2017). There I noted,

As for 'Talks at Google', I featured another episode a few years back in a Video Friday post titled Computer Chess 'Comedy' (July 2013), about the movie 'Computer Chess'.

Early in the clip the moderator says, 'Our guest is returning to Google today to discuss his new book...'. I couldn't locate the previous talk; maybe some helpful blog visitor can show the way.

Levy Rozman | GothamChess: The Internet's Chess Teacher | Talks at Google (57:03) • '[Published on] Jun 19, 2024'

The description starts,

The creator behind the most subscribed-to chess channel on YouTube, Levy Rozman aka GothamChess, discusses his New York Times bestseller “How to Win at Chess: The Ultimate Guide for Beginners and Beyond.” Brimming with practical and easy-to-follow tips for improving your game, the book includes over 500 instructional gameplay illustrations to help you better visualize the board.

It continues,

Levy Rozman, more popularly known as GothamChess, is an online chess streamer who earned the International Master title in 2018. A former scholastic chess coach, he is passionate about chess accessibility, and has donated $100,000 in scholarship funds for chess programs in education. He currently boasts the biggest chess channel on YouTube, where he focuses on creating fun and educational content. His channel has nearly 5M subscribers and 85M total monthly views. This phenomenal growth aided in Levy's transition from making straightforward tactics videos in his apartment to running live commentary at chess and chess-boxing events. • Moderated by Brandon Li.

All of IM Rozman's mentions on this blog have been related to a YouTube video. For the previous mention, see Gotham Gets Gaga (July 2023).

Chess.com ARR, Takeaways, and Sound Bites

Only 180 views for a chat with the man who shepherded the greatest chess boom of all time? The most popular chess streamers probably get that much attention in the first millisecond of their latest stream. There is definitely something wrong with this picture.

Erik Allebest - From 0 to 150 million ARR - The Chess.com story (1:12:33) • '[Published on] May 12, 2024'

I thought I knew most of the important accounting and investing acronyms, but ARR had me stumped. Although there are dozens of ARR acronyms in use, I'm guessing that the right one is explained on the page What is annual recurring revenue (ARR) and how to calculate it (paddle.com):-

Annual recurring revenue is a crucial success metric for subscription companies. Learn why it’s important and how to calculate it correctly. [...; AAR] is the yearly value of revenue generated from subscriptions, contracts, and other recurring billing cycles.

The description of the video starts,

Chess.com has grown from being a simple chess service to a thriving 150 million ARR business. The company has focused on making chess accessible to everyone through services around a product that hasn’t changed in centuries. We touch on the challenges of scaling a company and the role of titles and leadership in an organization and how many times Erik wanted to give up in the process.

Wanted to give up? Say it ain't so, Erik! The rest of the video description is worth a look and covers 'Takeaways', 'Sound Bites', and 'Chapters' (important segments in the video). Someone spent time putting all of this together and received only 180 views. For a previous post on the world's most successful commercial chess enterprise, see The Rise of Chess.com (January 2023; 32,365 views).

A THR 'Exclusive'

THR = 'The Hollywood Reporter', which is also the name of the Youtube channel responsible for the following clip.

Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder and A24 to Produce Ben Mezrich Chess Scandal Story | THR News (1:06) • '[Published on] May 2, 2024'

The description said,

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are set to team up once again. If deals close, the duo would partner with A24 on 'Checkmate,' a hot feature package centered on a book proposal by Ben Mezrich, the author whose books were adapted into films such 'The Social Network' and 'Dumb Money.' Fielder is attached to direct, while Stone will produce along with her husband and partner Dave McCary via the duo's Fruit Tree banner.

The description continued, 'To learn more about this story:' Emma Stone, Nathan Fielder Reteam with A24 for Ben Mezrich’s Carlsen - Niemann Chess Scandal Story (Exclusive) (hollywoodreporter.com; May 2024; subtitled, 'The indie upstart seems to have outwitted streamers and studios to win 'Checkmate' with a seven-figure deal that left competitors' head-spinning.')

The last time we saw the Niemann affair on this blog was This Month Features a Bottom Yahoo (September 2023). Let's hope the movie treats chess and chess masters better than Tobey Maguire's 'Pawn Sacrifice', last seen in Excerpts from 'Pawn Sacrifice' (May 2017).

Why hasn't anyone done a movie on the 2006 Kramnik - Topalov Unification Match (m-w.com), aka Toiletgate? I'm guessing it's because the players were Russian and Bulgarian, not the sort of nationalities that inspire massive Hollywood interest.

Playing Chess with Your Brain (*)

While I was preparing last month's Yahoos post, Real Yahoos (Sort Of) Spotted Again (March 2024; 'Yahoos = mainstream news stories about chess'), the top story -- which was not mentioned in the post -- would have been the Neuralink news. What's Neuralink? The following video, from Youtube's Guardian News channel, explains.

'Like using the force': Neuralink patient demonstrates how he plays chess using brain-chip (1:32) • '[Published on] Mar 21, 2024'

The video's description said,

Noland Arbaugh, a 29-year-old quadriplegic who has a Neuralink brain-chip, demonstrates during a livestream how he is able to control his laptop cursor with his mind to play chess. Arbaugh received the implant in January, after the startup founded by Elon Musk was granted federal approval to test the device in humans. Following the approval from regulators, Reuters reported that US Food and Drug Administration inspectors found problems with recordkeeping and quality controls for animal experiments at the company.

I don't know why that last sentence was added, because it wasn't mentioned in the clip. User beware?

(*) Irony intended.

Shiloh and Bros No.2

I thought this video looked familiar and, sure enough, I had already featured 'HCIRL no.1' from the same Youtube channel in Bond, Siblings Bond (June 2023). This second release was also good for more than a few laughs.

Human Chess In Real Life 2 (31:42) • '[Published on] Mar 1, 2024'

Everything I said in the no.1 post holds for this no.2 post, plus the channel has added another million subscribers. One of the top comments for no.2 said,

This channel has evolved. Once just a fun little family making jokes and having a laugh. Now, professional cinematography and a true story. Astounding.

All that and chess, too. Kudos to all involved.

Chess History, Math, and Art

Some chess history, some chess math. If this video had nothing more than that, I wouldn't have selected it for this month's featured video. The hook for me was the sequence of 17 chess images, all appearing to be AI-generated.

Chess: The Game of Infinite Possibilities (9:08) • '[Published on] Feb 7, 2024'

The description explains,

Dive into the captivating world of chess, a game that transcends time and technology. In this enlightening video, we embark on a journey through the history of chess, exploring its ancient origins and the evolution that has made it a timeless test of strategy and intellect. Witness the legendary games that have shaped its course and the grandmasters who have left their indelible mark on this intellectual battlefield.

We delve into the mind-boggling mathematics and probabilities that underpin the game, unveiling the sheer infinite possibilities that lie within each move. Discover how the advent of artificial intelligence has challenged and expanded the horizons of chess, pushing the boundaries of human versus machine. From the mystique of ancient strategies to the cutting-edge algorithms of AI, this video is a tribute to the enduring fascination with chess, inviting you to explore the endless wonders of this ultimate game of minds.

At around 4:30, the narrator mentions Boris 'Spass-Sky', rhymes with 'Pass-Pie'. Is the narration also AI-generated? The voice sounds human enough, but the monotonous delivery makes me wonder. From YouTube's 'Science Compass' channel, I hope I find the time to watch another video from the same channel.

When Geniuses Meet | Pep meets Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen (11:54) • '[Published on] Dec 12, 2023'

The description said,

The first of more than 1600 comments said,

As a chess and football fan, I see this as an absolute win.

Don't Burn It

All booms eventually run their course. Once covid confinement and the Netflix series have been forgotten, what to do with that wooden chess set gathering dust in the closet?

Turning a Chess Board into Wall Hooks (1:00) • '[Published on] Dec 6, 2023'

And on that melancholy note we close the book on the long-running series that started with The Sociology of Chess (November 2016). That makes more than seven years and over a hundred posts on a subject that I still don't understand.

10 December 2023

'Timeless Pursuit of Checkmate'

Well known images and well known facts combine to give a high level introduction to chess history. It's a pity there are number of small inaccuracies, including an illegal move.

Evolution of the Game of Chess (4:40) • '[Published on] Dec 7, 2023'

The description of the video also promises high level.

Let's explore key moments and pivotal rule changes that shaped the game we love today. Let's unravel the rich tapestry of chess, where intellect meets strategy in a timeless pursuit of checkmate.

If there were no more than this, I might have featured a different video this month, but the inclusion of hashtag #chesshistory (youtube.com; '1.3K videos, 355 channels') promises much future exploration. How is the order of the videos in the hashtag, most of which have less than 1000 views, determined?

World Chess Championship for Prisoners

This month's post in the series on The Sociology of Chess (November 2016) offers a few surprises:-

  • 1st surprise: There is an 'Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners'.
  • 2nd surprise: The tournament is sponsored by FIDE.
  • 3rd surprise: The most recent tournament was the third such event.

4th surprise: The event was broadcast online. Here is the video covering the final round.

3rd FIDE Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners - Final (2:15:47) • 'Streamed live on Oct 13, 2023'

The description explains,

The 3rd Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners will be broadcast on the FIDE Youtube channel with live commentary by WGM Almira Skripchenko, IM Michael Rahal, and WGM Keti Tsatsalashvili. They will be joined by special guests – FIDE officials, government officers, members of the penitentiary administration and policymakers, who will share the best practices of introducing chess to inmates, as well as former convicts who will be talking about their own experiences and the positive impact of the game on prisoners.

At 12:40 into the video, we learn that the event is 'Running on Chess.com'. The responsible FIDE site is Chess For Freedom Project (chessforfreedom.fide.com), where there are videos for previous rounds. Under 'News' we learn:-

  • 2023-10-13: Mongolia and India win Intercontinental Championship for Prisoners (ditto) • 'Teams of India and Mongolia became the champions of the third Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners, the event organized by FIDE and the Cook County (Chicago, IL, USA) Sheriff’s Office, after winning the final matches in youth and women’s sections of the biggest-ever chess event among correctional facilities.

Unlike most tournament reports, the men's event received only second billing in the article:-

The team of Pune prison (India) clinched the title in the men’s tournament of the Intercontinental Online Championship for Prisoners 2023 after beating El Salvador in the final.

You might expect that the games are not the level of quality you normally find for championship events. The commentator and the video broadcaster do a good job of keeping things interesting. Congratulations to the winners and to everyone else who made it happen!
