World Championships in London
How many World Championship events have been held in London? Here's what I found on my World Championship site (see link in the sidebar). From the 19th century:-
- 1834 Labourdonnais - McDonnell Matches
- 1843 Staunton - Saint-Amant Matches
- 1846 Staunton - Horwitz Match
- 1851 London Tournament
- 1858-59 Paul Morphy Matches
- 1861 Anderssen - Kolisch Match
- 1862 London Tournament
- 1862 Anderssen - Paulsen Match
- 1866-76 Wilhelm Steinitz matches
- 1883 London Tournament
- Background, 1886 Steinitz - Zukertort Title Match (USA); 'After 1883 London...'
After 1883 London we have to skip ahead a full century to find the next events:-
- 1982-84 Candidates Matches; semifinals
- 1985 Montpellier Candidates Tournament; 'Candidates Reserve; London, IX, 1985.'
- 1986 Kasparov - Karpov Title Match; London/Leningrad
- 1988-90 Candidates Matches; quarterfinal match x 1; semifinal matches x 2
- 1991-93 Candidates Matches; preliminary match x 1
- 1993 Kasparov - Short PCA Title Match
- FIDE/PCA Chronology; 1993 - 1996
- 2000 Kramnik - Kasparov
- 2012 Anand - Gelfand; 'London given option for World Championship 2012'
- 2012-2013 Grand Prix; London, IX-X, 2012
- 2013 Candidates Tournament
- 2018 Carlsen - Caruana
On top of those, London has hosted a few restricted events:-
- World Chess Championship for Women; 1927 London; Menchik 1st
-
World Chess Championship (Women) : 1927-39 Title Tournaments;
1927 London crosstable
- Computer Chess; 1980 & 2000
- 17th WMCCC - 2000 London; crosstable
Taking all of that into consideration, it's appropriate that London was awarded the venue for the 2018 Carlsen - Caruana match.
